Simple and easy Christmas traditions for kids make the holiday season so special. Happy Holidays! 2020 is looking every different than previous years. Our holiday celebrations are also going to have to be adjusted to smaller at home gatherings. So if you aren’t able to travel and be with your loved ones and are missing those holiday parties here are some easy and simple family traditions you can start up at your home this December.
Advent Calendars
Who doesn’t love a sweet treat everyday?! I grew up with chocolate advent calendars as a kid and everyday it was so exciting to open up a new window and have a little chocolate nugget. This is one of the perfect Christmas traditions for kids. Snag these calendars in November so you are ready for December 1st to roll around. Drug stores and grocery stores usually have these cheap candy calendars. You can also invest in a yearly calendar that you can use and put out as a decor piece year after year.
Make Ginger Bread Houses
Yum gingerbread, frosting, and candy! Decorating a gingerbread house is a super fun Christmas tradition for kids and to do as a family. Kits are easily available at most major retailers. If you have littler ones I highly suggest a house already constructed. Littles are great at decorating , building not so much. If you feel like taking it over the top make it a family competition. See who can make the most creative, biggest, or most festive house.
Gift homemade ornaments to friends & family
Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles and all other special family members LOVE hand made special gifts. Younger kids love spending time crafting and gifting items they made for others. Make it one of your annual Christmas traditions for kids. Michaels has been our go to for crafting kits that are simple and include all the supplies. Done and done! Ps. Grandparents loveee home made goodies from the grandkids.
Personalized Yearly Ornaments
As the kiddos get older who doesn’t love looking back at the baby and toddler pictures from those early years. Each year we purchase yearly picture ornaments. I swear half of our tree is filled with photo ornaments at this point. When decorating the tree is a fun time to look back at the previous years and remember the times spent together.
Go to the Ballet (at home)
Let’s go to the Nutcracker … but at home. š Plays and ballets are on a hold right now but you can still make it fun at home. There is something special about getting dressed up and going to a special holiday performance. Since thats on hold right now, make it special and fun at home. Get dressed up, order a special meal or make some holiday snacks and stream a Nutcracker ballet online or TV. We love having fondue and snacking with cheese, bread, veggies and even meat and shrimp. At home or at the theater it is still a fun memory.
Christmas Movie Marathon
It’s cold out, dreary, virtual learning all day, staying in your bubble? Then a special Christmas movie marathon is for you! Nowadays there are so many streaming options with all our favorite family holiday movies. Set the mood with extra pillows, or even an air mattress, lots of cozy blankets, and all the snacks for a family movie night. Turn the lights off and keep the twinkly lights and fire place on. Home Alone and Home Alone 2 is by our FAV family movie, everyone loves the traps. My kiddos love making this one of their Christmas traditions of kids.
Baking Cookies for Santa
One of our favorite traditions is baking cookies for Santa a day before or on Christmas Eve. Yes store bought is fine to leave for the big guy but the joy of baking for him is even better. My little ones love taking pride in making and frosting some tasty treats for Santa. It’s a great activity to with any family members visiting. We go super simple and do take and bake dough from he grocery store but if you have older kiddos making from scratch would be a great tradition to start.
